How to choose well

  • Classify by subject, not by office. The code represents what the document is about, not who wrote it.
  • Use the most specific valid code. The broad family gets you in the neighborhood; the manual provides the narrower code.
  • Watch overlapping topics. Military personnel belongs in 1000, while general personnel matters affecting civilian and military personnel may fall in 5000.
  • Verify reused codes. Old templates can carry outdated or overly broad SSICs forward for years.
  • SSIC is not a records schedule by itself. Classification and records disposition work together but are not the same thing.

The active manual states that SSICs are required on Navy and Marine Corps letters, messages, directives, forms, and reports/information collections regardless of medium.

MilAdmin intentionally treats this finder as a decision aid. For an ambiguous subject, check the active SECNAV M-5210.2 entry before finalizing the document.
