NAVY ADMIN GUIDE
Navy Enclosure Format
An enclosure is supporting material sent with the correspondence. Good enclosure formatting makes it obvious what is attached, how it is numbered, and where the body refers to it.

Enclosure checklist
- List each enclosure clearly
- Number enclosures consistently
- Use the same enclosure number when citing it in the body
- Ensure the actual files or pages match the enclosure list
- Mark or title enclosure material when required by the governing format
Do not confuse references and enclosures
A reference is a document you cite; an enclosure is material you are transmitting with the correspondence. A document can play different roles depending on how it is used.
Keep attachment names understandable
When correspondence is routed electronically, descriptive file names help reviewers connect each attachment to the enclosure list.
