References should support the correspondence, not become a bibliography. A good example uses only the authorities or source documents that are actually necessary and identifies them consistently.

Example reference block logic
- Label references consistently
- List only sources cited or needed for the action
- Use enough identifying information to distinguish the source
- Keep the body citations matched to the reference labels
- Verify titles, numbers, dates, and change information from authoritative sources
Avoid stale copied references
Old correspondence often carries references that no longer apply. Revalidate every reference before reusing it in a new document.
Use authoritative source data
MilAdmin can structure the reference block, but the user remains responsible for confirming that the source is current and correctly identified.
