Navy Standard Letter Example — Structure Explained

See a plain-language Navy standard letter example and understand how the subject, paragraphs, references, enclosures, routing, and signature fit together.

A simple standard-letter example

The example below is intentionally generic. It shows structure without pretending that fictional SSICs, serials, deadlines, signers, or authorities belong in a real command document.

From: Commanding Officer, Example Activity
To: Commanding Officer, Receiving Activity
Subj: REQUEST FOR ADMINISTRATIVE RECORDS REVIEW

1. Purpose. Request a review of specified administrative records.

2. Action. Identify incomplete entries and return the supported findings to the originator.

Why the example is deliberately boring

A useful template should teach structure, not seed made-up facts into a real letter. Your actual document may require references, enclosures, via routing, deadlines, points of contact, or other elements depending on the task.
